PAN stands for Permanent Account Number. It is an important document and a type of identity proof required during Income TAX filings and Opening Bank accounts. This PAN card is usually linked with all your personal Bank accounts. There are PAN cards for businesses which are created under Business names. Recent advancements in Digital payments, UPI modes of payments, Debit and Credit Cards usage, has made people to keep their PAN card updated with details like Name, Father/Husband Name, Address, Date of Birth, Photo, Signature, Mobile number, etc.
Every individual, is required to update their PAN card details and for that they will need a proper process for PAN Card Correction, which I am going to explain here.
How to Update PAN Card Online?
You can update your PAN card online by visiting NSDL e-governance website, which has been rebranded now as Protean.
Step-1: Visit the Protean website, https://www.protean-tinpan.com/
Step-2: Go to Services Tab and from the drop down click on PAN as shown in the image below:
Step-3: On this Page, under the heading Change/Correction in PAN Data, you will see Apply link, click that for PAN Card Correction page.
Step-4: On the Next Page you will see the following kind of interface as shown below. There will be a drop down labelled as ‘Application Type’. There you have to select the last option “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in existing PAN Data)” and in the ‘Category’ drop down you have to select “Individual”
Step-5: Then you have to provide the details like Last Name/Surname, First Name, Middle Name, Date of Birth, Email ID, Mobile Number, as shown in the image above. After submitting these details, you will receive a Token number to continue your application later.
Step-6: After clicking on the Continue with PAN Application Form button, you will be taken to next page where you will see 3 Options with radio buttons. To fill the PAN Card Correction form online through e-KYC and e-Sign without sending any physical paper to the official department, select the first option as shown in picture below. You will also be asked whether you need a fresh updated ‘Physical Copy of PAN Card’ to be delivered to your address. For that you need to check Option YES, a nominal fee will be charged.
Step-7: In the next step, you will be asked to enter last 4 digits of your AADHAAR Card. Than scroll down and enter the updated details that you want to change. Very important to note, don’t forget to tick the relevant box for which you want correction or where update is required. Than click on Next to proceed further. As per your demand for correction, you will need to provide following relevant proofs and documents.
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Address
- Proof of Date of Birth
- Proof of PAN
Step-8: In the declaration section, select Himself/Herself option from the dropdown and Enter your Name, Place and Current Date.
Step-9: In the next step, you are required to upload your photograph and signature for e-KYC. Click Submit and than it will show a preview of the filled form. Check this preview and if all good than it will ask to enter the first 8 digits of your Aadhaar card, enter and submit.
Step-10: Once you submit your PAN application form, it will take you to the payment page. After making the payment you will get a payment receipt.
Step-11: Now, once you have completed your payment you will need to do the e-KYC for which you will need to Authenticate the Process by submitting OTP that you will be receiving on your Aadhaar linked mobile number.
Step-12: In this Last step you need to complete the e-Sign process, which requires you to tick the authorization box, allowing NSDL to update you PAN details. And than once again you will receive OTP for verification. Now, you can download the acknowledgement form which is password protected. The default password is your date of birth in the DD/MM/YYYY format .
How to Change/Update Name in PAN Card?
First, visit the Protean website (the rebranded version of NSDL e-Gov Website). A direct link for the PAN Card Correction page is given here. On that page, you will see 2 dropdowns to select from, that is for Changes and Correcting existing PAN Data (PAN Card Correction) as Application Type and Individual as Category.
Now you have to follow the same exact steps as given above to update your PAN card details. Don’t forget to check the box where you required to update the details, in this case where you want to Change or Update name in PAN Card. After completely submitting the form with payment, it will ask for KYC verification with e-KYC and e-Sign. After that, the PAN update application will be soon processed and delivered to you which takes around 7 to 10 days.

Fees for PAN Card Correction or Update
For PAN Card Correction, the fees are as follows:
Dispatch within India: Total of Rs. 107/- inclusive of taxes, payable through Net/Banking, Credit/Debit Card or Demand Draft.
Dispatch Outside India: Total of Rs. 1,020/- (Application processing Fee of Rs. 93/- + Dispatch/Shipping Charges Rs. 771/- + 18% GST), payable through Net/Banking, Credit/Debit Card or Demand Draft payable at Mumbai.
PAN Card Update Status Check Online
To track the PAN Card Update status online, visit the status tracking page from the following link, https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html
Select Application Type as PAN – New / Change Request from the dropdown. Enter the 15-Digit Acknowledgement number. Enter the captcha code and click Submit.
How to Change Date of Birth (DOB) in PAN Card?

On that Page, you will be seen 2 dropdowns to select from, that is for Changes and Correcting existing PAN Data (PAN Card Correction) as Application Type and Individual as Category.
Now, follow the same steps as given above to update your PAN card details. Here, it is very important to remember to check the box where you required to update the details, in this case where you want to Change or Update Date of Birth (DOB) in Pan Card. Once you complete the application process and payment step, you need to do verification with e-KYC and e-Sign. After that, your PAN update application will be processed soon.
To know status of PAN (as Operative or Inoperative), PAN Applicants may visit https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/verifyYourPAN.
It is also important to update your PAN card details as it will be linked with other documents like Aadhaar card, and the details should match in both documents. If your PAN is not linked to your Aadhaar than your PAN card may become inoperative or inactivated.
