Why it is important to Update PAN Card of a Minor to Major?
What is Minor PAN Card?
An individual who is below 18 years of age is considered as a minor. As all individuals are free to apply for a PAN card. And if such underage individual is holding a PAN card than it will be a minor PAN card. This minor PAN card does not has Photograph and a Signature, and therefore the minor’s PAN card cannot be used as an Identity proof for minors.
Therefore, it is essential to update PAN card of a minor to major.
As soon as the minor turns 18, it considered as a major or an adult. Now, he/she has to update his/her PAN card details with photograph and signature, after which it can be used as a proof of identity. This updating process does not change the previous allotted PAN number, that remains the same for an individual, once allotted.
It should be noted that it is illegal to possess more than one PAN card by an individual. So, if you want to make any changes or updates in your PAN card details, you need to go through the PAN Card Correction process. You can’t apply for a New PAN card under any circumstances, if you have been already allotted one.
How to Change Minor PAN Card to Major?
The minor PAN card does not contains the photograph and signature of the minor. So, once the individual turns 18, his/her minor PAN card should be changed to a major PAN card. Once this change has been requested to the Income TAX department through NSDL or UTIISL, a new updated copy of the PAN card will be issued with the Photograph and signature. This can be done online through the Protean, rebranded version of NSDL website.
Process of Updating Minor PAN Card to Major
The complete process of changing minor PAN card to major are as follows:
Step #1: The applicant is required to visit the Protean website from the link given below:
https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html
Step #2: Now select the dropdown for ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data’. Select the category as ‘Individual’.
Step #3: You will be asked to fill all the details again, and while filling up the form, you need to select the “Photo Mismatch” and “Signature Mismatch” boxes.
Step #4: In the next step you will be asked to make the payment through Net Banking/Credit or Debit Card or you can also pay through Demand Draft. Once you complete the payment step, you will be redirected to the acknowledgement page, which consist of all the details that you have filled in the form.
Step #5: Save this acknowledgement and take a printout of this. Now, you have to affix two recent photographs of the applicant on this acknowledgement form, duly signed as instructed.
Step #6: Along with this acknowledgement receipt, you have to add proof of Identity and proof of address (Minor PAN card documents), along with Demand Draft if opted for Demand Draft payment option. All this documents should be properly enclosed in an envelope which should mention ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN — N-15 digit Acknowledgement Number’ on it.
